"I got it...buckets...we need lots of buckets!" |
Who would have guessed it?
After taking a beating in the polls for the citys non-response to the Christmas weekend blizzard, Mayor Mike and his friends must have been reading this weeks storm updates on this blog to make sure they had all their bases covered!
Back on January 5th, I posted a storm update regarding yesterday's weather event wherein I stated - "I may be wrong, but after the Christmas weekend blizzard fiasco, I have a feeling that if any snow materializes, Mayor Bloomberg will have his Sanitation Department in the street with buckets to catch the snow before it hits the ground! As always, a shift in the track of the storm or a change (earlier or later) in its intensification could change this forecast markedly."
Sure enough, in today's New York Post there is an article regarding the citys massive response to yesterdays inch or two of snow wherein Mayor Mike is quoted as asking his Sanitation Commissioner...
"Wait! What if the minute the first snowflake falls, we have all the Sanitation workers hit the streets holding buckets to catch the snow?"
Now before all the emails start rolling in, lets get two things straight...
1. When I made the remark about buckets back on January 5th, I was fully aware that yesterdays event was not going to be a blizzard, just a run of the mill winter snow event. I was simply indicating that I thought the Mayor and his agencies would "over-react" to yesterdays storm by making sure that was a great citywide presence of plows, salters, etc., ready to be seen by the public and more importantly, the press.
2. The article in todays N.Y. Post is a satire about the Mayor's over-reaction to yesterdays "snow globe storm." The Mayor did not actually ask about having sanitation workers "holding up buckets" to catch the snow.
The lesson for the mayor with these two snow events is really quite simple...
You shouldn't attempt to kill a really pissed off grizzly bear with a BB gun nor should you attempt to kill a mouse in your kitchen with a hand grenade!
Oh well, there is always next weeks storm to look forward to! After all, they say the third time is the charm!
