During the first week of February, the poor boxes at St.Thomas More Church were broken into and all the money was taken. Again.
Commenting on a posting about the $480 million in FEMA funds that (hopefully) will all be going to rebuilding the boardwalk, Peter Gillespie noted “I know the Rockaway boardwalk is longer than the 2.2 mile boardwalk in Long Beach. But Long Beach seems to be a lot cheaper at 42.2 million dollars.”
The Delta Beta Zeta chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority is inviting pregnant women (only) to a Stork’s Nest Community Baby Shower. There will be workshops and free baby items on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. at Safe Space at 1600 Central Avenue in Far Rockaway. For info and to register call 917-648- 2385.

The I Grind Against Violence Talent Showcase is bringing two dozen live performers to the Far Rockaway Educational Campus on Bay 25th Street. Presented by IGrindDoYou? and the 101st Precinct Community Council, the free event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28.
Overheard in a Rockaway office after lunch arrived: “Soup is here!” The reply? “You mean the Red Cross finally came through?”
The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Broad Channel is hosting its 12th annual Jane Fuller Memorial Brunch on Sunday, March 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds from the event at the American Hall off Cross Bay Boulevard go to Cancer Care. Jane Fuller was a well missed member of the Auxiliary.
Rockaway Roasters on Rockaway Beach Boulevard at Beach 92nd Street had its doors open while they trained staff this past week, offering customers a chance to sample their coffees and say ‘hello’.
The Rockaway Theatre Company launches its production of Legally Blonde - TheMusical, JR. which opens on Friday, Feb. 27 and runs to March 8.
Settling in for a long winter? Last Saturday a man was seen trudging across the Waldbaum’s parking in the swirling snow, carrying a 24 roll package of toilet paper on his shoulder.

A recent Queens Brownstoner article, A Walk In Far Rockaway, starts off unpromisingly by describing the area as “a doyenne whose beauty has long-since faded.” But it does go on to say that “Far Rock is a thriving neighborhood and there are surprising elements to it that make it ripe for urban exploration” and includes fascinating extensive local, architectural, historical and other details.
Queens NYC Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandoski sent out the following about upcoming boardwalk construction: “Please be advised that Skanska will be working on successive Saturdays (only during normal business hours) over the next coming weeks in order to lift and install our new precast concrete boardwalk planks.This work will occur only in the Phase 1 area (Beach 86th to Beach 97th Streets) and at no other locations.There will be no pile driving on Saturdays, only a crane lifting and placing planks into position.”

Breezy Point’s own Marie Moloney has been named a Deputy Marshall of the Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade.You can cheer her in Brooklyn on Sunday, March 22.

According to NYC Parks’ Dorothy Lewandowski, Parks is pushing to add two more surfing beaches in Rockaway: One from Beach 65th to Beach 67th streets and one from Beach 110th to Beach 112th. No dates have been set out yet. Right now the only legal places to surf in all of New York City are between Beach 67th and Beach 69th streets and from Beach 87th to Beach 92nd street.
“As you have probably already guessed, based upon the complete lack of compositional structure, good use of an eye path, color, lighting, etc., that veritably screams from each of the photos, I must assume all guilt for taking them. On February 23, 1945, Associated Press combat photographer Joe Rosenthal captured the now famous image of five U.S. Marines and a Navy corpsman raising an American flag after the battle of Iwo Jima in the Pacific.Three Marines depicted in the photograph, Harlon Block, Franklin Sousley, and Michael Strank, were killed in action within days of the photo being taken.
