MTA Prepared for Major Winter Storm





With significant snowfall, bitter cold temperatures and a weather emergency declared for the MTA service region, service will be impacted across the MTA network tonight and tomorrow morning.
MTA Long Island Rail Road will operate on a Weekend schedule Friday, January 3rd. MTA Metro-North Railroad will operate on a Saturday schedule. In addition, service can be curtailed or suspended on a line or route basis depending on snowfall amounts.
Customers are urged to monitor Service Status on this page for the latest updates.


New York City Transit


Subways: To protect trains from the snow, subway cars are being stored underground. There is no express service on several subway lines, most service is operating local.
Buses: All buses in operation tonight have been outfitted with tire chains for traction, excluding express buses. No articulated buses are in operation.
Paratransit: Customers may experience additional travel and wait times. Depending on conditions, customers may want to reconsider travel, unless medically necessary.


Long Island Rail Road


Weekend Schedule Effective 12:01 AM Friday, Jan. 3
No Train Service between Greenport and Ronkonkoma and on West Hempstead Branch.
The MTA Long Island Rail Road will be implementing a weekend schedule a result of the anticipated blizzard conditions  which might deposit 6-10 inches of snow. For alternate travel options, click "read more."


Metro-North Railroad


Tonight, Thursday, Jan. 2: Metro-North will operate reduced service with train combinations and cancellations to prevent trains from becoming stranded during the storm. After midnight, we will operate an hourly schedule making all stops. 
Friday, January 3: Metro-North will operate a Saturday schedule (without the trains marked as Shoppers’ Specials in the timetable) due to the projected impact of winter storm Hercules.


Bridges and Tunnels


Bridges and Tunnels will have 100 pieces of snow-fighting equipment in service and available for storm-fighting operations.  This includes 43 salt/plow combos and 42 tow trucks. There are 7,250 tons of salt on hand.
