Early Thanksgiving For Vets

By Dan Guarino
Broad Channel’s VFW Prince-Wynn Post 260 thanked local veterans on Sunday, Nov. 8.
Some 30 veterans, many disabled and from the St. Albans Veterans’ Home, came by bus to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall on Shad Creek Road.
They were treated to a lavish meal of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, turkey and ham, collard greens, green beans casserole, corn, stuffing, cranberry, rice pilaf and corn bread. Resorts World Casino donated 12 turkeys for the occasion and many members home-cooked various dishes. Among the servers was Assemblyman Phillip Goldfeder. Preparations were overseen by the VFW’s own chef Rob Prokopowicz.
The vets also enjoyed live music from Walker Hornung, Eddie Joe McCabe and Anthony Puleo. Later they enjoyed apple and pumpkin pie, cupcakes, jello, crumb and raspberry cake, coffee and soda. They were treated to a lavish meal of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, turkey and ham, collard greens, green beans casserole, corn, stuffing, cranberry, rice pilaf and corn bread. The afternoon was the VFW’s way of both honoring Veterans Day and celebrating Thanksgiving with them. It is one of many programs they do both in at the post and at various locations close to the vets.
VFW Post Commander Matt Conklin thanked everyone, including the volunteers, cooks, servers, supporters and even the vets, for making it a special day.
