Broad Channel Bits

By Dan Guarino

On Nov. 12, Hillebrand’s funeral home was overflowing with people paying their respects to Dawn McIntyre, who passed away on Nov. 10.
At the front, an honor guard of two Broad Channel Volunteer firefighters in full dress uniform stood at either end of the casket, all through each wake.
I remember being at the BCVFD Installation Dinner at the end of last February. Each year, new officers are sworn and awards are given. As I recall, Dawn McIntyre was given a special award for her contributions to the department. It was an impressive and long list of accomplishments and positions she had held. Equally impressive is the list of positions she held and work she’s done for the Broad Channel Athletic Club, and all that she has added to a our community. At the dinner, I raised my camera to record the moment, but Dawn was up and back before I could line it up. At best all I got was a blur. Later I got a nice shot with her and her husband Dan at their table. It seems to me though that with a person like that, whether you have captured their image or not is irrelevant. Yes, their loss is great and filled with sadness. But the mark they have left on this town and on all around them is indelible and without equal. Dan McIntyre and all the family are in our thoughts in this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Dawn’s two favorite organizations, the BCAC and the BCVFD.I remember being at the BCVFD Installation Dinner at the end of last February. It was a busy weekend in the Channel. The PS 47 Parents Association sponsored a Fall Craft and Gift Fair on Nov. 15, which drew many vendors and interesting items. A holiday sale over at the VFW on Saturday and Sunday also did very well. Proceeds went to their respective organizations. American Legion brunch last Sunday was terrific, very well attended and raised funds for the Children’s Christmas Party.

Finally, someone asked the other week where Dick’s Hideaway, a popular BC bar, was located. Courtesy of Dan Tubridy, I can tell you it was at the corner of Lanark and East 8th roads. In the early 1900s it was the post office and general store. I have a great picture from 1919. Today it’s a private home. Thanks for reading!
