This month the volunteers of Prince-Wynn Post 260 held two successful benefit events.
On Saturday Oct. 10, they hosted their first annual Chili Cook-Off and Music Festival.
The day featured teams competing to serve up their best chili outside in the VFW’s spacious backyard. More than 130 guests got to stop at each group’s tents and sample their recipes while enjoying a sweeping view of Jamaica Bay.
The event was a benefit for the New York Families for Autistic Children (NYFAC) and was a great success.
Although heavy rains the previous night kept some cooks from coming, contestants had registered from as far away as Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Local resident Bill Bowden came away with the top prize and handmade trophy.
A successful Penny Social on Saturday, Oct, 17, brought a full house to the VFW Hall on Shad Creek Road.
The numerous prizes for the silent auction included gift baskets, new bicycles, a 50-inch flat screen television, tickets for television tapings, kitchen items, Christmas decorations, toys and more.
Proceeds for the event will go toward the VFW’s annual Thanksgiving dinner for the disabled veterans of the St. Albans medical center and other programs.
VFW Post 260, located at 713 Shad Creek Road, hosts events and provides veteran’s programs all year round.
