I’ve been doing a lot of walking over the past few months to and through the park that surrounds the BC Library. Officially, it’s Broad Channel Park. The children’s recreation area is actually 17 Road Playground. We all know the whole thing as 17 Road Park. Either way, it’s a gem.
There’s the playground, two tennis courts, two basketball courts and a two-sided handball court, as well as plenty of benches, shade trees and walking paths. It’s great to see so many people of all ages enjoying what we have right here. And who says a basketball court can’t be a baseball diamond or a roller hockey rink. Or that you absolutely can’t play baseball or basketball in flip-flops or bare feet?
They will have clothing, Disney items, beauty items, handcrafted wares and plenty more.
Come out for the VFW Flea Market on Sept. 26 and 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.You don’t have to be from Broad Channel to enjoy it. The VFW is at 705 Shad Creek Road, just off Cross Bay.
A few weekends ago VFW volunteers packed up everything for a barbecue and party and rolled out to St. Albans in Queens. They spent the day bringing fun and good cheer to the disabled vets at the medical center there. The VFW regularly hosts vets here in BC. This day was for those servicemen and women who couldn’t make the trip. My hat is continually off to all the people in our area, all of our neighbors, who work so hard to make our part of the world a better place.

The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department is winding up its 2015 fundraising and making call back visits to homes they missed or didn’t hear from. Make your donation today to make sure you did your part for our community.
You may remember the Sept. 19, 2005 issue of The Wave mentioned last week with the story about the BC residents who chased down a drunk driver who tore through the Channel. In that same issue was the stirring story of “Charges Fly From Both Sides At Mott Creek Rezoning Hearing.” But that’s just the kind of contentious controversy a local newspaper has to deal with.
This Sunday, Sept. 27, there will be a memorial for artist and friend Penelope Atheras. It will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Rockaway Artists Alliance’s T-7 Gallery at Fort Tilden. All are welcome to come.
The BC Historical Society is looking for information on the Packard Club. Barbara Toborg notes, “All we know is that it was at 917 Shad Creek Road, and it probably went into the bay during Hurricane Donna in 1960.” Please send any information at all to me at workingstories@aol.com.
Finally, you may know that I am the president of the non-profit Rockaway Artists Alliance. It’s a volunteer post and I can say the members, staff and volunteer Board and I work very hard to keep it running and keep bringing good things to Rockaway and Broad Channel. Twenty years ago people from the Channel and Rockaway started the whole thing off. This year, on Oct. 10, we’re having an anniversary gala at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club to celebrate and also raise much needed funds. BHYC is also where we had our very first exhibition. I invite you to join in and purchase a ticket. I personally have three to sell, at $125 each. Send me an email. You can also go to www.rockawayartistsalliance.org to sign up. All proceeds are going to RAA to keep it going and growing.
