Council Passes Property Tax Abatement for Victims of Hurricane Sandy

(May 29, 2014) The City Council passed legislation, co-sponsored by Councilman Ulrich, that will provide relief in the form of a property tax abatement for owners of 1,684 repaired or restored buildings. Many property owners who suffered property damage during Hurricane Sandy, and then conducted repairs have experienced a drastic increase in their assessed valuation. Even if the repair or rebuilding merely restored a building to its condition prior to the storm, the assessed valuation and therefore, the real property taxes, of some of these properties will be significantly higher in fiscal year 2015 than in fiscal year 2013. This tax abatement is meant to fix a quirk in the law and provide homeowners with some relief as they continue to recover from Hurricane Sandy.

St. Francis de Sales Students
Make the Trip to City Hall
(May 23, 2014) Fourth graders from St. Francis de Sales School in Belle Harbor visited City Hall as guests of Councilman Ulrich. Students enjoyed a tour of City Hall, one of the oldest continuously used municipal buildings in the nation, including the City Council Chambers, rotunda and the office of the Mayor.

Ulrich and DEP to hold Flood Prevention Workshop in Lindenwood

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Councilman Ulrich will host an important flood prevention workshop and information session on Wednesday, July 9th 2014 at P.S. 232Q The Walter Ward School in Lindenwood. Homeowner's will receive a guide to flood preparedness, one-on-one consultation and other helpful materials.
Following the flooding event on April 30th, Councilman Ulrich has been working with DEP to identify and correct the equipment malfunction that caused sewer backups in the area. Councilman Ulrich is also assisting residents file claim forms with the Comptroller
to seek reimbursement for storm related damages. Claims can also be filed electronically here.
Ulrich Urges NYC to Hire More Cops

Since 2002, the NYPD has lost approximately 60 to 75 NYPD officers per precinct. The impact of this decrease has been a heavy reliance on overtime to meet daily enforcement demands, which has cost the City millions ($634.6 million dollars in 2013 alone). Councilman Ulrich and his colleagues are fighting for an additional 1,000 officers to address public safety concerns and understaffed precincts.
Participatory Budgeting Update:
Safety Mats Installed at Scholars'

(May 27, 2014) Councilman Ulrich joined students and faculty at Scholars' Academy in Rockaway Park to unveil new safety equipment installed in the school gymnasium. This was made possible by the efforts and advocacy of parents and community leaders through the participatory budget process.
Ulrich Opposes Plastic Bag Tax
"Plainly speaking, the plastic bag fee is just another back door tax that I cannot, in good conscience, support. Small businesses already have to comply with enough bureaucratic red-tape regulations and many of my constituents already pay enough in high taxes, utilities, and skyrocketing water and sewer rates. Enacting additional taxes, fines and fees simply doesn't make any sense" said Councilman Ulrich.
