It's January, the month we are closest to the sun, but......

Today (Saturday January 24th) the earth will reach the point in its orbit when it is closest to the sun which is also called Perihelion.

Despite our closeness to our nearest star, January remains the coldest month in terms of average temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere.

It is the tilt of the earth on its axis, not its proximity to the sun, that determines our seasonal average temperatures.

Go figure?
