FEMA Funds to Help NY Gas Station Operators Install Generators for Use in Emergencies

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has released millions of dollars to help New York gas station operators install power generators for use in emergencies.

The $5.1 million comes in response to huge lines at gas stations in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced the funding.
They say that many stations had gas after the storm, but didn't have the power to pump it.
A recent New York law requires every gas station within half a mile of a highway exit to be able to switch to generator power within 24 hours of a disaster.
The new funds are estimated to cover 75 percent of the cost for station owners.
