I must confess this column is one week late, it should have been done on December 23rd. Sorry, I have not been feeling very well. In fact, I was not even at our last Council Meeting had to work from minutes and information from Danny.
100th Precinct Community Council Meeting: Wednesday December 18th, 2013: The President of the 100th Precinct Community Council, Danny Ruscillo was pleased to announce a new “State of Art” emergency vehicle that the 100th Precinct received from NYPD Fleet Services. The 100th Precinct was chosen to be the first precinct to be given this vehicle. The vehicle even has a Zodiac boat on the rear. It’s an excellent addition for the 100th Precinct area.
Danny also announced the development of the NYC crime map. It enables the public to click on the area that you are interested in on the map to find out the statistics for a particular area, maps.nyc.gov/crime.
Volunteers Pat Wood and Joe Hartigan were thanked for their years of volunteering with the 100th Precinct Community Council. The After School Chess Club and other volunteers were also thanked. Christmas parties were hosted at chess clubs P.S./M.S.47 and P.S./M.S.114. Thanks to the generosity of Tommy’s Pizza in Broad Channel, Slices & Ices Beach 116th Street and Ciro’s Pizza (Waldbaum’s Parking Lot). The children were also given chess club shirts as gifts donated by Condor Pest Control.
The 100th Precinct Community Council will host their fourth annual “Chili Cook Off” on January 17th at the Knights of Columbus Hall from 7- 10 p.m. Pay at the door $12 no advance tickets. Our chili judges this year will be, John Cori, Rick Horan and Hank Iori. The Council is hoping for a large turn out because of the “Superstorm” the Council was unable to host their “Chili Cook Off” in 2013.
Captain Craig Adelman shared information regarding the additional cameras that will be installed at the Hammel Houses. The NYPD will have access to these cameras. This will aid in the fight against crime. At this time there is an officer indefinitely assigned a fixed post (24/7) outside the Hammels.
The captain also explained that any sex offender is monitored by a separate unit, The Sex Offender Monitor Unit (SOMU). There are Internet sites that show where sex offenders are located within NYC, previously Danny had shared information on the Internet sites such as Family Watchdog, and it is a free service to help locate registered sex offenders in your area, familywatchdog.us.
Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder addressed the members. He realizes everyone is concerned about the rebuild progress of the boardwalk or lack of it. Hopefully in the New Year work will be underway. The assemblyman was proud to announce a $400,000 grant for Jamaica Bay protection. This will also hopefully begin within the next six months. Our assemblyman will continue to fight for the resources we need from Albany.
A council member inquired about the fate of our Rockaway ferry. Goldfeder informed the members that the mayor-elect administration had already spoken to Sea Streak to inquire about the ridership numbers and use. He feels somewhat confident that the Rockaway ferry will get another short term reprieve. This will allow the new administration time to look into the future of the Rockaway ferry. The new administration had also contacted him regarding the ferry and other community issues.
It was announced that the January Community Council Meeting will be held in the newly renovated ballroom of Temple Beth El located at Beach 121st Street. The Community Council will have a “winter recess” during the months of February and March. The Council will now hold summer meetings in July and August.
