BC American Legion Celebrates Big On Halloween

Spirits were in the air as Broad Channel Legion Post 1404 celebrated Halloween in a big way on Saturday, October 26th.The Legion Hall at 209 Cross Bay Boulevard was packed with goblins, cowboys, superheroes, cheerleaders, football players, roller-skaters, orange Oompa-Loompas, a colorful blue-green Miss Argentina, walking trees, pop stars and more. Costumes were elaborate, including one woman dressed as a lighted railroad crossing, a land shark complete with legs sticking out of its jaws, a large reindeer, a group of yellow Simpson’s, a Ken doll in a box, characters and revelers who stepped right out of A Clockwork Orange and other films. Appropriate to post-Sandy Broad Channel, even TV’s Gilligan and the Skipper made an appearance.
In what judges noted was a very tough decision, best costume prizes went to a cross dressing faux Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke and a Beetlejuice contestant sporting an elaborate lighted carousel headdress she fashioned herself.
Partygoers enjoyed good music, hot food, flowing beverages and dancing. A high point of the evening was a conga line that involved nearly the entire costumed crowd and snaked around the room and up, across and down the stage.
The party took place three days before the anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. After a long year of dealing with the storm, which hit the island community hard, and its aftermath, many at the party expressed that it was great to see so many people together and having fun.
Legion organizers dubbed the event a big success. All proceeds go to the American Post’s rebuilding and programs.
