West 12th Road Tidal Flooding - Then and Now

W12th Rd - Saturday, October 27th, 2018 @ 10:30 am

The above picture of the bay end of West 12th Road was taken at the peak of a high tide at tide10:30 am this morning.

The 6.22-foot astronomical height of this high tide was exacerbated the coastal storm with an additional 2.5 to 3 feet of storm tidal departure resulting in an almost 9-foot tidal storm tide causing moderate and in some cases major tidal flooding.

In the past, similar height storm tides have resulted in the loss of both private vehicles and other personal property. vehicles.

It is interesting to note that although tidal flooding due to damaged or absent individual property bulkheads was significant within the individual breezeways/driveways between properties, the total depth of tidal flooding on the newly raised roadbed on West 12th Road, at least at the bay end of the block was 4 inches or less at the height of the storm tide.

In an effort to make a "before and after" comparison of tidal street flooding on West 12th Road in order to assess the efficacy of the newly constructed end of street bulkhead and raised roadbed I researched my records and found a similar 9-foot storm high tide which impacted West 12th Road without much advance warning back on Tuesday, February 9th, 2016 with almost 23 inches of tidal flood water on the street. .

The photo below says it all!

  2. The cent of the block, probably in the area of the catchbasins/cisterns, had significant flooding of about 1.5 to 2 feet on the roadbed. Part of the reason is the lack of bulkheads on some homes and that the road is likely sloping into the catchbasins. It should also be noted that one of the residents where the water was highest is somewhat disabled. Something further should be done to assist this portion of the block.
