The Harvest Moon is the full Moon nearest the start of fall or the autumnal equinox. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, the Harvest moon is rising late this year. Usually it occurs before the equinox in September, but this year the Harvest moon will actually occur at 2:40 p.m. on Thursday, October 5th, 2017.
The Harvest moon stems from times past when farmers would need to start gathering in the food to prepare for the lean winter months. For several evenings just before and after this full moon, moon rise comes soon after sunset providing bright moonlight early in the evening aiding farmers harvesting their summer grown crops...hence, it's called the "Harvest" Moon!
