Dear Neighbor,

I am proud to announce that I have been appointed to the New York State Assembly Committee on Insurance.

This committee reviews all proposed legislation for homeowners, car, life, and health insurance (among others) and is tasked with oversight for the state's multi-billion dollar insurance industry.

Sandy was a wake-up call for so many families victimized by insurance companies who collected premiums but disappeared when we needed help. I intend to use my new role to hold insurers accountable and protect our families as they struggle to recover and rebuild.

VIDEO: My Third Inauguration
I have officially been sworn-in to my 3rd term as your Assemblyman!!!
The Oath of Office was administered by my close friend and Breezy Point resident Judge John Ingram, Kings County Supreme Court Justice. The ceremony was held at P.S. 207 in Howard Beach to give the students a real-life lesson on how our government works. Students organized and performed all the duties, including speaking, presenting the colors and singing the National Anthem. In my Inaugural Address, I encouraged every student to volunteer and dedicate their time to improving our community.

Lowering Our Utility Bills
The public utilities have a responsibility to provide our families with the basic services we need at an affordable cost. They should not be increasing their bottom line at the expense of families struggling to make ends meet. That's why I have called on the State Public Service Commission (PSC) to reject a request by Con Edison to raise customers' rates this year. With energy costs at historic lows, now is not the time to raise rates. I will continue the fight to ensure our families have the access to affordable heat and electricity we deserve.

Safer Crossing in Rockaway
We have beautiful beaches and parks. Sadly, for many families in Far Rockaway, accessing these can sometimes be dangerous. I have asked the Department of Transportation (DOT) to install additional stop controls and crosswalks along Seagirt Blvd. between Beach 9th and Beach 17th Street. The busy roadway makes it difficult for families to cross and by improving pedestrian access, we will help prevent a potential tragedy and allow our families the opportunity to safely enjoy the community.
