Emergency Response In Broad Channel
Six FDNY units and 30 firefighters responded to an emergency call in Broad Channel on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
At 6:22 p.m. a propane gas leak was reported at a home at West 17th Road and Cross Bay Boulevard. HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials) and other responders found a large propane tank with its valve stuck in the open position. Firefighters secured the area as a precaution and also notified the Department of Health and Department of Environmental Protection. The situation was handled without incident and was declared closed at 8:09 p.m. Broad Channel does not have natural gas lines running to it. Residents of the island community are dependent on either electric or propane gas for cooking.
The average gas tank holds 100 lbs. of propane and stands about 4 ft. tall
