President’s Message
The first Civic meeting of 2015 will be held on Wednesday, January 21st at 7 pm at the VFW hall. This is a change from our usual schedule of the 4th Thursday of the month due to a scheduling conflict.
At the January Civic meeting there will be a presentation by NYC Parks Department on the final design for Sunset Cove. This Restoration project, for the site of the former marina at the end of West 19th Road, has been a project that the Civic Association has been working on for a number of years. The project has been the subject of numerous Civic meetings and the final design will reflect the concepts that the community had highlighted and had endorsed in a unanimous resolution. This area will see resilient features such as dunes/berms and oyster revetments along with wetland restoration and walking trails as well as a small boardwalk viewing area. The site will be funded by a number of different sources but the bulk of the funding, 4.85 million, will come from a Department of Interior Grant that was procured by the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers.
At the December Civic meeting, elections were held for the upcoming year.
The results were:
President - Dan Mundy
Vice President - James Harper
Financial Secretary - Tracey Harper
Recording Secretary - Kathleen Lawless
Trustees – John McCambridge Jr., Dan Mundy Sr. & Dan McIntyre
The Build it Back Program had a number of issues arise and some new policies established. Many of these issues are in response to problems that our residents brought to light. At the January Civic Meeting we will have Rudy Giuliani, who is the Queens director for Build It Back, present to discuss any questions and to clarify:
· Homes over water and recent policy changes that may allow for assistance to these homeowners,
· Propane use for Broad Channel residents
· Enclosure of foundations for elevations and new construction
· Over elevating for parking under homes
· The current plan for dealing with the DOB issues for homes that are not on the old maps and that are presenting issues during elevation design discussions
We will also have a presentation by the land owner for the large open lot located at the corner of East 20th Road and Crossbay Boulevard who is seeking a variance for commercial use. The presentation will include a conceptual plan for a commercial establishment at that location.
Quote of the Month --“HAPPINESS is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.”----Aristotle
Respectfully submitted,
Dan Mundy Jr.
