Last Friday, Jan. 16, I was on the east side of Cross Bay watching a moving van on West 16th Road. It was 8:30 in the morning. I was just coming back from working at The Wave.
Couldn’t tell if they were moving in, moving out or just moving stuff around. I would have gone over and taken a closer look, but I didn’t think it was a good idea to dodge traffic at that busy hour of the morning. Plus I certainly didn’t want to look, ahem, “overly inquisitive” in Broad Channel!
Anyhow, if you’re moving in on West 16th, welcome to the neighborhood!
Well, there are a few happenings around the Channel that you’ll want to know about and come out for.
Roll up your sleeves! There is a blood drive this Sunday, Jan. 25, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Camillus’ Springman Hall, at 180 Beach 100 St. Walkins welcome. Need more information? Call 718-634-8229.
By the way, many will be pleased to know that the heat was working again at St. Virgilius last weekend and Masses were once again held at the church. St. C, our sister parish, provided space when the St. Virgilius pipes were frozen.

You’re going to be hearing a lot about Relay For Life. The big event on May 16 will be the 24 round-theclock walk to support the American Cancer Society. But the Relay For Life of Broad Channel, Breezy and the Rockaways teams are already working hard to raise funds and encourage people to join in for this good cause.
They’re hosting a free kickoff party this Sunday, Jan. 25. Everyone is invited to this complimentary event just across the bridge at the Knights of Columbus, 333 Beach 90th St. from 1 to 5 p.m. Refreshments and appetizers will be served, and a cash bar will be available.
“We invite you to make a difference and help us provide hope to patients, families and friends coping with cancer…,” the e-vitiation says. “Join us for (the) kick-off party…and learn more about how you can become a team captain and participate.”
They have been doing fundraising events in the Channel and elsewhere for months now. Stop in, have some fun and see what they are about. One fundraiser you’ll want to sign up for now is PaintNite on Thursday, Feb. 26. Tickets are going very fast. Broad Channel’s talented Jennifer Porcheddu will lead the event at the BCAC Clubhouse from 6 p.m. You don’t have to be a painter to enjoy one of these fun nights.
Jennifer explains, “The Relay for Life is an overnight walk to raise funds and awareness for a cure for cancer. We don’t sleep because cancer doesn’t sleep. It’s an inspirational night dedicated to hope. We come together to celebrate those who are fighting their battle and honoring those who lost their fight. Our three teams, Got Hope?, Debbie’s Dream Team and My Ladies are determined to find a cure. Help us finish the fight. All proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society.”
You can bring your own snacks and beverages to this adults only 21 and over event. Or help support theBCAC by purchasing snacks and beverage there. 50/50s will also be sold.
Come out, have a great time, support and Rock LLS at Grassy’s from 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6. Hosted by our own Mason Porretto and Kristen Kim, the night will feature great live music from local bands the Poorhouse, Walker and the Brother of the Grape, and Mr. Big Deal plus sounds to shake by from DJ Dan.
Coming from ‘out of town’? The Grassy Point Bar and Grill is at 18-02 Cross Bay Blvd. in BC.
There will be fun bar games and raffles and all proceeds go to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Kristen will be running a NYC 1/2 marathon for LLS in March.
This one little island sure packs a lot of good works and good will. Come, support and enjoy!
