The City is looking for vendors who will sell beach stuff. Everything from beach chairs and bathing suits to sunglasses and sunscreen. Everything except food that is. That’s covered already. Oh, and no jewelry. They’d like vendors to rent umbrellas and beach tents, too. You can visit the Parks Department website to get all the details. We’ve give you the gist of the RFP on Page 21.
We hear that notorious landlord Jay Deutchman has sold the old Rockaway Park Hotel on Beach 116th and his vacant house on Beach 114th. We’ve gotten our hopes up before. City records are not indicating a closing yet. And while we’re mentioning 116th Street we have to wonder. Now with the Game Changer competition officially kaput, we wonder if the owner, Esther Koenig, will do something on her own with
the Sand Bar and the rest of the dilapidated mess at the beach and 116th.

Crom Martial Training on Beach 92nd Street is quite the story. Their original gym on Rockaway Beach Blvd between Beach 91-92 got washed out during Sandy. As soon as they could, they opened up temporary quarters at Beach 88th Street. After a few months, they found a new spot on Beach 92nd Street and RBB. Now, they’re moving from a 2200 square foot gym to a 5000 square foot place directly behind the current spot. Their slogan is All It Takes Is Heart. Well, they’ve got plenty!
Looks like more noise for Broad Channel and old Arverne. The Daily News reported that an appeals court rejected a lawsuit by homeowners in Queens seeking to stop the Port Authority from expanding a runway at Kennedy Airport. The Eastern Queens Alliance had argued in its federal lawsuit that the runway project would result in more noise for residents near the airport.
Our free website, RockawayTimes.com, reached a milestone of sorts last week. The site has now gotten more than 150,000 views. Last week’s Beef Chip column and the story about the Flea By The Sea attracted a lot of eyeballs.
Facebook is CLOSED and will not be accessible on February 29, 30 and 31. Please share. You didn’t fall for that did you? Some prankster started that one and at least two Facebook regulars we know fell for it, hard. We don’t break news all the time but here goes: there is no February 29 in 2015 and forget about the 30th and 31st.
Rockaway Red is a new wine that proved popular among locals during the holiday season. Bungalow Bar might have some left but the one liquor store that carried it is sold out. It’s our understanding that it’s a family recipe.
Rockaway is full of talented photographers. Well, we just came across another in Susannah Ray thanks to a tweet by Jen Poyant. We’ve included a couple of her pics in this week’s paper but it’s well worth your while to go to her website SusannahRay.com
Chuck Schumer and Phil Goldfeder want the Feds to use Sandy relief money to fix the Nassau Expressway / 878. Not a bad idea since it is part of the evacuation route out of Far Rockaway and the road floods all the time. But Schumer suggested it could be part of the Army Corps Reformulation Study. Stop, Chuck. Just stop.
We want the Reformulation Study done, finished. There won’t be jetties or real protection until it’s done. Adding more to the study will only drag it out longer.
Our deep admiration goes out to those who take the ocean plunge on January 1. Quite a few groups take part up and down the beach. We’d jump in but somebody has to take the pictures. Happy New Year!
