Ulrich and Miller Host Woodhaven Veterans Town Hall

Woodhaven, NY – Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park), Chair of the City Council Veterans Committeeand Assemblyman Mike Miller (D-Woodhaven) held a veterans town hall Wednesday night at American Legion Post 118 in Woodhaven to discuss important issues impacting local veterans and their families. Ulrich touched upon legislation the Council Veterans Committee has explored including various local laws and resolutions to improve city services for veterans and returning military members. Assemblyman Miller briefed the audience on strides the State Legislature made this past session for veterans and the Assembly’s 2015 plans.

Councilman Ulrich and Assemblyman Miller were joined by Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Loree Sutton, New York State Division of Veterans Affairs Deputy Director Jamal Othman, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Outreach Specialist Edward Perry, Vietnam Veterans of America National President John Rowan, Veterans of Foreign Wars Queens County Commander Ryan Graham, American Legion Queens County Adjutant Paul Schottenhamel, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America Senior Program Manager Jason Hansman. Veterans representing other service organizations and neighborhoods throughout Queens were present for the event as well.

“This was the first of many town hall events I plan on sponsoring that will bring together elected officials, government representatives, veterans service organizations, and the community in an effort to raise awareness about important issues facing New York City’s veterans,” said Councilman Eric Ulrich. “I want to thank everyone who participated last night - especially American Legion Post 118 for providing the venue for this event.”

“This upcoming session, I will make it a priority to pass legislation that I have introduced to give veterans’ services organizations 120-days to rectify violations given by city agencies as well as legislation that would create a voluntary contribution on the state personal income tax return for veterans’ services organizations.  I am committed to fight for our veterans in the Assembly to get them the services that they need including state funding assistance for the burial of indigent or unclaimed veterans.  I want to thank Councilman Ulrich for his leadership in addressing the needs of the large and increasing number of veterans throughout New York City and I thank him for bringing us all together to discuss the needs of veterans during this town hall meeting,” said Assemblyman Mike Miller.
"As the Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Veterans' Affairs, It is an honor to serve shoulder to shoulder with Chairman Ulrich on behalf of New York City veterans and their families. There simply is no greater privilege,”said Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Loree Sutton.

“I am delighted to participate in tonight’s Veteran Town Hall. I want to thank Councilman Eric Ulrich and Assemblyman Mike Miller for providing a venue where the New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs can share information on state services and programs available to Veterans in their districts. We look forward to working with our local elected officials on future collaborations to assist our state’s Veterans,” New York State Division of Veterans Affairs Deputy Director Jamal Othman.
"I thank CM Ulrich and Assemblyman Miller for this opportunity to inform veterans on the adverse effects on their health from military service. In particular, their exposure to toxic substances such as Agent Orange in Vietnam and other location; various poisons in Iraq during the first Gulf War; and the "burn pits" and other issue in Iraq and Afghanistan. Further, we ask everyone to support S2738 and HR5484, legislation that would provide funding for studies on the effects of toxic substances on the progeny of Veterans since Vietnam,” said Vietnam Veterans of America President & CEO John Rowan.
"The Veterans Town Hall meeting hosted by New York City Council Member Eric Ulrich and New York State Assemblyman Mike Miller certainly gave local New York City Veterans in attendance an opportunity to hear the agenda and work from multiple Veteran Agency Representatives and Organizations. This was not only great for transparency in regards to the issues our Veterans are faced with but also an excellent commune to network and share ideas collectively to enhance the lives of Veterans from all Generations," said Veterans of Foreign Wars Queens County Commander Ryan Graham.

"IAVA applauds Councilman Ulrich and Assemblymen Miller for holding a town hall to hear from veterans in their constituency. In this especially trying time for veterans it is great to see elected officials speaking directly to their veteran constituents. IAVA is proud to be participating," said Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America Senior Program Manager Jason Hansman.
