Dear Friend,

It may not always seem like it, but things are looking up.Ozone Park has a new public school, Broad Channelstreets are getting resurfaced, Howard Beach seniors are hitching a new ride thanks to Catholic Charities,Woodhaven and Richmond Hill are working together to remove graffiti eyesores and improve our quality-of-life and Beach 116th Street in Rockaway has never been cleaner!

Am I proud of the progress we've made over the past few months? Sure I am. But as your representative in the City Council I know that there is much more important work to do. From holding city agencies more accountable to making sure that all my constituents receive their fair share of city services, it's my job to deliver results.

Please take a few moments to review some of the important events and updates I am including in this eNewsletter. As always, if I can ever be of assistance to you with any issue or if you want to share any ideas, tips or insights please feel free to contact me at any time.

(October 8, 2014) Councilman Eric Ulrich, the Queens Economic Development Corporation and local community leaders gathered in Richmond Hill to announce a new anti-graffiti initiative.

"Graffiti is a crime and something that lowers property values and diminishes our overall quality of life," said Councilman Ulrich. "Today we are taking a proactive step to nip this problem in the bud and revitalize our small business corridors."
Councilman Ulrich secured $25,000 in discretionary funds to clean graffiti along Woodhaven/Crossbay Boulevard; Jamaica Avenue; Atlantic Avenue; 101st Avenue; Liberty Avenue; and Rockaway Boulevard.
Ulrich & Catholic Charities Announce New Bus Service for Area Senior Centers

(September 22, 2014) Councilman Eric Ulrich recently announced funding to support supplemental bus service for seniors at four Catholic Charities senior centers in District 32; Howard Beach, Woodhaven, Rockaway Park, and Ozone Park.

Ulrich secured $25,000 in this year's budget to fund the operational expenses of transporting older adults to one of four area senior centers where they can take part in a variety of activities. Additionally, the van will be used for day trips to shopping centers, outdoor parks, sporting events and other destinations.

"Our seniors deserve better transportation options," said Councilman Eric Ulrich. "Since Hurricane Sandy, far too many of our elderly friends and neighbors have become isolated in their homes or apartments. This shuttle bus service will ensure that our seniors have direct access to senior centers and the vital services and programs they provide."

(September 23, 2014) Councilman Eric Ulrich joined colleagues Elizabeth Crowley, Karen Koslowitz, Ruben Wills and Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito in honoring Mary Ann Carey, retiring District Manager for Queens Community Board 9. Carey was presented with a Proclamation for her 35 years of dedicated service to the communities and residents of Kew Gardens, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven, and Ozone Park.

"Mary Ann Carey was a superb public servant who always put the best interests of the community above all else," said Councilman Ulrich. "She was a strong voice for safer streets, better public transportation and never wavered in her commitment to serving others. While she will be sorely missed, I know she will remain actively engaged with the community she served faithfully for so many years. I wish her nothing but the very best as she begins the next chapter of her life."

Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) agreed to repave East 6th Street, Shad Creek Road, and other side streets initially left out of the Broad Channel Street Resurfacing Project.
"This truly was a team effort," said Councilman Ulrich. "I'm glad Broad Channel is finally getting the attention it deserves. Slowly but surely, Broad Channel is rebuilding and it shows!"

(September 4, 2014) Council Member Eric Ulrich
held a press conference last month with George McDonald, Founder and President of The Doe Fund, to announce expanded street cleaning services for Beach 116th Street. The Doe Fund provides homeless and formerly incarcerated men with job and career development opportunities through a year-long transitional residential program. Doe Fund workers will now provide supplemental trash pickups and street cleaning services to Beach 116th Street twice a week.

"This program is helping revitalize one of Rockaway's main commercial strips," said Councilman Ulrich. "The small business owners here embody the heart and soul of the peninsula. They're resilient, hard-working and provide dozens of jobs to local residents. I'm glad to do my part to keep the streets clean and support them."

Councilman Eric A. Ulrich, Chairman of the City Council Veterans Committee, presented a Good Conduct Medal and City Council Citation to Ozone Park resident, Edward Boes. Mr. Boes, 79, is a Korean War veteran who joined the Navy at the age of 17. He served as an Airsdale, station policeman, and trained Navy cadets how to fly in inclement weather. After some work with the military and National Personnel Records Center, Councilman Ulrich's office obtained a replacement Good Conduct medal from the United States Navy.

"Ed Boes is an American patriot and a pillar of the community. This award recognizes his exemplary service to our country and is only a small token of appreciation for all that he has done on our behalf. I am proud to know him personally and consider it an honor to present him with this commendation," said Councilman Ulrich.
