The past week actually felt much warmer, and humid, than most of the actual summer. But it was perfect for any number of outdoor events, like the gigantically grand 1st Annual Fall Festival, hosted by the American Legion and the Broad Channel Athletic Club down at the BCAC Field. More later.
Don’t miss the first American Legion Auxiliary Brunch of the season this Sunday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. What better way to start or end a week than with great food, drinks, dessert and great company?
Never been to a BC brunch? You don’t have to be from Broad Channel to come to one! The Legion Hall is at 209 Cross Bay Boulevard. Everyone is welcome.
By the way, the VFW put on a great brunch last Sunday. What made it even more special was that this was the very first one since Hurricane Sandy. The renovated VFW Hall looks fantastic and it felt great to be there, to be a part of this special BC occasion. And the food was superb!
This Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 4/5, the VFW Post is having a Flea Market. Come down from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for some very interesting and unique merchandise. No doubt you’ll find exactly what you are looking for, even if you didn’t know you were looking for it!
Might also still be time to get a table. Only $10 per day! Call Liz at 646-744-9230.
Get off your cellphone and sign up for the six-hour Defensive Driving Class Point and Insurance Reduction Program. The class will be on Wednesday, Oct. 8 and 15, from 7 to 10 p.m. A $45 payment guarantees a seat. No tests for the course, which will be held at St. Camillus Springman Hall, 185 Beach 99th Street in Rockaway Park. Completing it gets you a 10 percent discount off liability, collision and no fault insurance for three years and up to a four-point reduction off your license. Call Helen at 917-553-2409 or 718-945-4648. Proceeds benefit St. Camillus-St. Virgilius Religious Instruction Program (CCD).
Boo! The 2nd Annual Halloween Party at American Legion Post 1404 is howling in on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 8 to midnight! On Sunday, Sept. 21, the Legion hosted more than 90 vets for a barbecue that included fruit salad, chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, beans, soda, coffee, cake and of course great music. The vets came by special buses from St. Alban’s, Fort Hamilton, Manhattan and elsewhere. They had a great time.
A word from BCVFD Chief Ed Wilmarth III: “We would like to thank those who came out and supported Mardi Gras. The parade was a big success and hopefully a sign that Mardi Gras will get better and better each year. The BCVFD will be coming door to door this month and next to finish our annual fund drive for this year as well as recruiting members. Remember portions of your donation this year will be going to Susan G. Komen for Breast Cancer Awareness.”
Broad Channel Historical Day is coming up on Sunday, Oct. 19, at the VFW Hall. From noon to 5 p.m., come stroll through the Channel’s past. People are also invited to bring items for the Historical Society collection. Original photos will be copied and returned.
Hopefully you caught the BCVFD Annual Ladies Softball Game and the after party last week Saturday.
We see that Jamie Pisani is no longer associated with the Rockaway Beat newspaper. Good luck to you, Jamie, in whatever you’re doing next.
The St. Virgilius Golden Age Club meets every Thursday from 12:30 p.m. at the BC American Legion Hall. Across the bridge, St. Camillus Golden Age Club meets Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. in Springman Hall in Rockaway.
St. Virgilius Altar-Rosary Society is meeting at the Legion on Monday, Oct. 20 at 12:30 p.m.
Christ Presbyterian by the Sea Church is taking bookings for its newly rebuilt and reopened Social Hall. Planning a social event? Reserve your dates now. Call Joyce Adamiszyn at 718-479-3580 and leave a message.
The church’s Sunday school starts on Oct. 5. Stop by the side entrance on 10:15 a.m. for registration.
Sunday services at Christ Presbyterian start at 9 a.m. Sunday Mass at St. Virgilius is at 10. If you’re like me, you might just stop in at both. This Sunday, I attended services at Christ Presbyterian, got a warm greeting from the whole congregation and a mention from the pulpit. I felt like a celebrity!
More than that, I got to meet guest preacher Deborah Mahaney and her husband, Mike. She is a certified candidate for ordination and is a Ruling Elder and Deacon. She has also earned a Master’s degree in Divinity from the New York Theological Seminary and works also for the General Board of the Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. She’s currently organizing a journey to Malawi to show Board members firsthand the work the ministries are doing there.
In her sermon, she talked about the idea of “emptying oneself,” which in turn is “about being there for the other,” she said. “This congregation came together after Sandy,” she noted, “not only to rebuild, but to be there for each other.”
To this example of living scripture, she said her late beloved mentor would have said, “Yes!”
Finally, the following note was posted by the owners of the Channel’s Rock and Bagel: “Rob and Bobby…would like to say thank you to all of our loyal customers over the past 4 1/2 years. Sad to say, but we sold the Bagel Store...We hope that the NEW owners of Rock N Roll Bagel, Dimitri and Spiro, will continue doing the same for the next 20 years. We were happy to serve you during that time... Thanks Again!!”
