Early morning patrons of Hamberry’s Food and Market in Broad Channel were surprised to find the shop was closed and the door was blocked by crime scene tape.
According to police, the grocery store and deli, located at 801 Cross Bay Boulevard, was burglarized sometime after closing between 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, and Friday, July 18, 6:50 a.m. Video surveillance, showed two males wearing hoods and gloves entering the premises. They gained access by forcing open a side door just offWest 8th Road. Once inside thieves removed cash from the store’s register, an in-store ATM and also collected lottery money. They also stole cartons of cigarettes and removed a safe containing cash, which they took with them. Between merchandise and stolen money, police put the burglary’s haul at more than $16,000.
Crime scene investigators spent a good part of the day collecting and documenting evidence, though the store was able to reopen later in the afternoon.
Sources noted there have been a number of other recent burglaries fitting this pattern. Also, it was noted that a crushed, empty can of Red Bull energy drink was found near the point of entry, which is similar to other incidents.
The Hamberry’s burglary as well as the other crimes, are currently under investigation.
