Broad Channel Bits

By Dan Guarino
Driving along Cross Bay Boulevard last week, I saw a man unscrewing the seat off a toilet that had been put out for garbage collection the next day.
I have heard of taking the door off of a discarded fridge to make sure no one gets trapped inside. However I couldn’t imagine what possible misadventure was being prevented by removing the toilet seat and lid.
Perhaps it was some argument about constantly leaving the seat up. We are a small community. I expect I will be hearing more.
Good to see quite a few people out digging and planting on the median last Saturday morning. You’ll probably be noticing their handiwork, with new flowers everywhere, for quite some time to come.
And even though it was raining all night, and misty in the morning, the day turned out sunny and even hot.
My friend Mandy, coming from Howard Beach to Rockaway, saw all the green and white balloons tied to the trees along Cross Bay. She said to me, “Wow, there must be something special going on in Broad Channel!”
I’d say the BC Beautification Committee’s Spring Planting was success.
Hope you also went over to the BC Volunteer Fire Department’s open house on Noel Road. I know they were also out with the pumper truck, helping to water the new plants on the Boulevard.
Don’t forget to donate to the Vollies when you can. They can always use new members as well. Even if it’s just helping out answering the phones for a few hours, you are needed. In addition, there is a BCVFD program for younger people to learn and help with essential tasks. Stop by, visit their website or call and find out more.
This month the flag at 17th Road Park flies for Angel ‘Mike’ Luciano, United States Air Force, Vietnam.
Miraculously, it is now warm out. At least for now, buds are blooming on the trees and people are out on bikes at all hours. The other day I watched a father and son practicing lacrosse against the handball wall by the library. And it looks like the courts are in good use.
The ‘Left Turn Permitted On Red’ sign is still not back up on 20th Road. Avoid a ticket; watch yourself when you are turning.
There is still a For Rent sign on the former Bay-Gull Store. Interested? Call the number in the window.
Need a laugh? Get a ticket for the Rockaway Theatre Company’s “Moon Over Buffalo.” I had the pleasure of catching the show last week. Trust me, you will laugh from start to finish. They are a talented and dedicated bunch over at RTC. Go enjoy the show. You can get tickets atwww.rockawaytheatrecompany.org. Hey, maybe you’ll even think about joining!
Thinking about Mother’s Day, I came across something my late wife Liz wrote in Broad Channel Bits in May, 2004.
“Whether the day was full of wrapped gifts, pretty cards, colorful flowers or lots of hugs and kisses-whether the reason for your motherhood is 5 months, 5 years or 55 years old-I hope all Moms and Those-Who-Are-Like-Moms had a wonderful day.” I think this says it best.

Here’s an item from The Wave from 30 years ago. “A lost family pet, kicked out of a car by a brazen thief who stole the auto from in front of a commercial strip in Howard Beach, is safe at home. Mitzi, a dog who belongs to a Broad Channel family, was found in West Hamilton Beach.”
The Shad Creek Association’s 2014 Golf Outing is on for Friday, June 13. $75 per golfer, which includes the awards party/dinner at the Shad Creek Association. There’ll also be prizes and raffles. Or you can enjoy the party for $30. Contact Mike Kelly at 917-868- 4453 or e-mail michael_ p_ kelly@yahoo.com to register.
Keep your eyes open for lots of things happening around the Channel, in Rockaway and on the Bay. The National Park Service and the American Littoral Society should have quite a number of programs and cruises coming up.
No doubt my friend, Ilanna, in Rockaway, will be enjoying a few of those.
This week’s meeting of the procrastinators club has been postponed again. It was originally schedule for last week, but things came up and, well, you know …
My thanks to Matt Whalen for getting all the jokes which I forgot I tossed off while writing this column. (The Easter Bunny is a particular standout.)
Just checking through the old e-mail bag. Thanks to Dorothy Fraher for noting that Eveyln Rossi has also celebrated a 100th birthday here in BC!
Finally, I wanted to thank everyone who, once it was announced that editor Kevin Boyle was leaving, expressed their confidence and congratulations and straight away assumed I would be filling that spot. I deeply appreciate that.
Now just so you know, after due consideration, I have decided to keep doing what I am doing and contributing in all ways from my current post.
But thanks!
This column is for, by and about Broad Channel. It exists because of our one-ofa kind community. I am always grateful to those people who are regularly in touch about things coming up and things going on around town.
Feel free at any time to send me information about what’s happening around the Channel or things that involve BC.
E-mail me at workingstories@aol.com.
Thanks for reading!
