The beach officially opens this weekend. This kicks off a full season of music, community and other events all over the peninsula. Businesses, both new and still coming back from the storm, will be looking forward to a busy summer season. From Far Rockaway to Breezy Point, go out, shop, eat, have fun, support and enjoy it all!
This is the last weekend to catch “Moon Over Buffalo” at the Rockaway Theatre Company in Ft. Tilden. Final performances are tonight, Friday, May 23, and Saturday, May 24, at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at www.rockawaytheatrecompany.org. Don’t miss it!
There was a very impressive turn out for the Sandy audit meetings hosted by Comptroller Scott Stringer in Breezy Point and Arverne. People are not only coming to speak for themselves, but also for our entire Rockaway/Broad Channel community and its future.
Slight correction: Jenni Crain and Brent Birnbaum stopped by The Wave last month, checking into possible places to open an art gallery. Glad to hear they now have a space and are working hard for a ‘just in time for summer’ opening day. Thank you, Spell Check.
“It’s not just about remembering, the years past, but the future and the years ahead of us. And there are great years ahead of us.” These were part of Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski’s remarks at Flushing Meadow- Corona Park. Somehow there is an echo in those words for us here in Rockaway as we look to the past and to our future.
The Weather Channel announced that “AMHQ with Sam Champion” will be airing live from Breezy Pointfor a ‘Hurricane Prep Rally’ on Friday, May 30. The show’s co-host Mike Bettes “will reveal the city’s post-Sandy rebuild and take a look back at the historical superstorm.”
Thousands of people, including quite a few from Rockaway and Broad Channel, had a great time at the World’s Fair anniversaries last Sunday. It was all topped off by a pair of concerts and a fireworks display that was beyond belief. NYC Parks often gets a lot of flak from our corner of the beach. But they did a great job with this event. Boy, do they know how to throw a party! Go Parks!
Dozens of ESPN volunteers, the good men and women of the marketing department, were out here recently planting beach grass. Volunteers are always needed for all kinds of projects. Got some time? Get out there and lend a hand. You never know who you’ll meet. Has Rockabus hit a flat? According to their Facebook page, the popular summer shuttle from lower Manhattan and Brooklyn to many points in Rockaway is not shutting down for good. It just won’t be running this summer.
Curb and sidewalk rebuilding has definitely begun along the east side of Cross Bay Boulevard in Broad Channel and is moving northward. This is in preparation for repaving the entire Boulevard.
As long as Cross Bay is being resurfaced, can someone finally repave Rockaway Beach Boulevard? People driving from the Cross Bay Bridge to the eastern end of the peninsula are tired of getting their milk and cookies severely tossed around. This can’t be good for Rockaway’s businesses either. Even on a New York driving scale, this is a bad road. Fix it, and let’s get Rockaway moving.
Wise words overheard this week: “A broken bridge gets me nowhere.”
