Assemblyman Goldfeder Announces Start of Sandy-Damaged Road Repairs in Broad Channel

Streets to be resurfaced and Sandy damaged sidewalks and curbs to be replaced

Broad Channel, Queens - Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder with local community leaders announced road repairs are about to begin for Sandy-damaged or washed away streets and sidewalks in Broad Channel. The NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) are mobilizing contractors to begin work starting, Monday, May 19th.

“Our streets and sidewalks in Broad Channel have needed upgrades for years and Sandy only made the situation worse,” said Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder. “I commend the Department of Transportation and DDC for listening to community concerns and ensuring our community makes a complete recovery after the storm.”

Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder with Dan Mundy Sr., from the Broad Channel Civic Association met with DOT Queens Borough Commissioner, Dalia Hall and DDC representatives to discuss project plans and coordination. The construction beginning on Monday, May 19th is expected to be completed within six weeks before July 1st, Goldfeder noted.

“The Broad Channel Civic Association appreciates Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder’s efforts in advocating for the road repair work in Broad Channel that will address the damaged streets and curbs that occurred as a result of Hurricane Sandy,” said Dan Mundy Jr, president of the Broad Channel Civic Association. “This project is welcomed news as our streets are in serious need of repair and the depressions are causing vibrations from traffic in the homes of our families along Cross Bay Boulevard. This project which will include the side streets in a second phase will help erase the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy as well as address the deteriorating road conditions that have become intolerable for our community."

The road work conducted under the umbrella of the NYC Department of Transportation is provided by Sandy federal grant funding that includes street and sidewalk repair and repaving on Cross Bay Blvd. between 5th and 20th Roads. According to DDC, the scope of work also includes new pedestrian ramps, curbs, and sidewalks to be installed in Broad Channel.

“This much needed project is a victory for our families in Broad Channel,” concluded Goldfeder. “Rebuilding our roadways is an encouraging sign that our community is coming back stronger than ever.”

Additionally, FEMA milling contracts to finish the work for damaged side streets in the area are scheduled to begin in September, according to DOT.
