U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer and Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder today announced over $4 million in federal funding for New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYCDPR) for Sandy-damaged sports areas in Rockaway. Superstorm Sandy’s widespread flooding and wind caused extensive damage to NYC DPR-owned rest areas, picnic areas and handball courts between Beach 105th Street and Beach 74th Street.

“Superstorm Sandy’s wrath destroyed a number of Rockaway’s cherished recreational areas and we need to make sure they are repaired so that families can enjoy them for years to come,” said Schumer. “This federal funding will help New York City rebuild these Sandy-damaged play areas without putting a heavy burden on local taxpayers.”

"Rebuilding our parks and providing areas for our families to enjoy is crucial for our recovery after Superstorm Sandy and must be a priority," said Assemblyman Phillip Goldfeder. "With summer around the corner, more families will be enjoying the warm weather outdoors. This funding will put an end to the excuses and finally allow for the complete rebuilding of recreational areas in Rockaway for our families and children to regain a sense of normalcy. "

The repair work includes twelve sports areas along Rockaway Beach, between Beach 105th Street and Beach 74th Street. Sandy damaged handball court areas and asphalt in the play area as well as damage to the parks storage area and damage to picnic areas. The only scope of the work that has been completed is demolition.

Schumer and Goldfeder today announced$4,755,732 in federal funding for the damaged sports areas in Rockaway and said that the community should be involved in final plans for the work.
