We expect the first really visible construction activities for the Rockaway
renourishment contract to begin this weekend, including subsequent beach
closures for a safety perimeter. We expect this first area, temporarily
closed to the public, will be from Beach 117th to Beach 113th.
The first step will be landing the submerged offshore pipeline from the
borrow area in the vicinity of Beach 116th. Also, the beach berm in the
area of Beach 116th to Beach 109th will be moved back toward the boardwalk
line to facilitate new sand placement, so if asked about earthmovers moving
sand on the beach in that area, that is what is happening.
We expect the dredge to arrive shortly after the submerged pipeline is
established. The dredge's arrival is still contingent upon ongoing work
elsewhere and ultimately weather conditions. It is expected to arrive not
this coming week, but it should hopefully be arriving the following week
(during the week of April 6).
The sand pumping schedule has been altered to respect required environmental
windows closing off areas from construction activities due to endangered
species and will first focus on the western portion of the project area.
Work will first begin from Beach 116th and move east to Beach 81st, meaning
placement activities in these areas of the beach should be completed in
advance of the beach season. Work will then switch directions from the joint
where the pipeline is landed at Beach 116th and sand placement activities
will progress west to Beach 149th. Areas east of 81st will be completed once
any endangered species have left the area.
As was the case last year, we will coordinate with our partners at NYC Parks
regarding necessary rolling beach closures in areas where sand placement is
active. As we complete areas, we will work to reopen the beaches as soon as
feasible so that beachgoers can utilize the newly enlarged beach adjacent to
the closures.
Enjoy your weekend!
