According to the Army Corps there are only a handful of companies that do beach replenishment. We have to wonder if they’re all as unreliable as Weeks Marine.Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina is waiting for Weeks to begin a sand replenishment job. The people of Wrightsville have just been told that there will be a delay. First, they were told a dredge was coming from nearby Morehead City, North Carolina. Now a different dredge has to be used. This one will be coming from New England.
An Army Corps project manager in North Carolina, Bob Keistler, was quoted in the Lumina News: “Weeks Marine has committed to more work than they can handle, and we are trying to make sure our jobs meet all the requirements.” That sounds like something Dan Falt, project manager in Rockaway, might say.
It doesn’t make us feel better knowing Weeks Marine is screwing coastal communities besides Rockaway. If the Army Corps knows Weeks Marine is too busy it must stop giving it work and/or include clauses in contracts that calls for significant ---significant financial penalties if it can’t meet deadlines.
They were supposed to start in September, then the end of the year, then January, then March 22nd. Now it’s the first week of April.
Rockaway needs sand for protection. Weeks Marine is the reason protection is stalled.
