Assemblyman Goldfeder Urges DOT and DDC to Expedite Sandy-Damaged Beach Blocks

17 Months after Sandy, beach blocks still an eyesore and safety hazard for residents and beachgoers

Belle Harbor, Queens—Assemblyman Phillip Goldfeder (D-Rockaway) has urged the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Department of Design and Construction (DDC) to take immediate action and expedite all repairs to the severely Sandy-damaged streets and sidewalks along the beach blocks on the west end of the Rockaway peninsula.

“I commend the city for the immediate construction of new baffle walls along the beach, however it is unacceptable that our hardworking families are still waiting for DOT and DDC to fix the streets and sidewalks on the beach blocks damaged during Sandy,” said Assemblyman Goldfeder. “I strongly urge the appropriate agencies to work together and take the necessary corrective actions to rebuild our community and make our streets safe again.”

Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder sent a letter to Queens Borough Commissioner of Transportation, Dalila Hall and Department of Design and Construction Acting Commissioner, David Resnick urging them to repair the sidewalk and streets along beach blocks from Beach 1108th Street to Beach 144th Street in Rockaway.

DOT has submitted plans to the city Office of Management and Budget for coordination with DDC as a full capital project, but currently no timeframe has been provided when the street and sidewalks will be repaired, noted Goldfeder.
“Street and sidewalk safety should be the Department of Transportation’s top priority to keep our families in Rockaway safe,” said Assemblyman Goldfeder. “Homeowners are expected to make sidewalk repairs immediately when there is a safety hazard and city agencies should be held to the same standard. We all must do everything we can to ensure our neighborhood recovers and remains safe.”
