Bigert-Waters - Erasing the American Dream

Biggert-Waters - Erasing the American Dream

The Senate has passed the Homeowners Flood Insurance Affordability Act requiring FEMA to complete an affordability study and propose solutions to address flood insurance cost issues before they can raise premiums.

Great news right?

All that has to happen now is for the Senate bill to be delivered to and voted upon and passed by the House of Representatives and then sent to the President for his signature.

Not so fast!  We still have problems...

Earlier this month House Speaker John Boehner stated quite clearly that his Republican controlled House won't even take up the recently passed Senate bill when it arrives on his doorstep.  That means that Speaker Boehner will not even allow the bill to come to the floor for debate among and subsequent up or down vote by the House of Representatives.

Making matters worse is the fact that the White House has stated that President Obama does not support this bipartisan legislation and believes that "Delaying implementation of these [Biggert-Waters Act] reforms would further erode the (NFIP's) financial position."

[NOTE:  The above statement by the White House made no mention of a threat of a Presidential Veto should the House pass the  Homeowners Flood Insurance Affordability Act and I do not envision President Obama doing so if the bipartisan bill should get out of the House and onto his desk.]

The federal government screwed this NFIP issue up to a fare thee well and it is up to the federal government to fix it!  This struggle has only just started and we have a long road to travel before any of us can rest easy without worrying if we will still have a community to live in and a roof over heads in the coming years.

Your neighbor,

Pete Mahon
