The End of Camelot - 50 Years Ago Today

"As The World Turns" was airing on CBS the afternoon of November 22, 1963, when Walter Cronkite broke in to tell the nation that President Kennedy had been shot. Coverage then went back to the soap opera, but not for long. Charles Osgood reports on how America learned of the shooting of a president.

I was attending a gym class at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn that day when the news of the President's assassination was broadcast over the loudspeaker system.  We were dismissed early and I remember my trip home to Queens on the GG subway line was eerily silent, even though the subway car was packed.
