Huge Step Forward forRockaway Beach Rail Line

I joined Queens College President James Muyskens and Professor Leonard Rodberg, Chair of the Department of Urban Studies yesterday to announce plans for acomprehensive study for the abandoned tracks of the old Rockaway Beach Rail Line.

The project will be led by the Queens College Department of Urban Studies along with faculty, staff and students. The collaborative effort will include a feasibility study, needs assessment and basic cost analysis.
While other groups are using tax dollars to hire expensive consultants and do one-sided studies, we're utilizing local expert resources and educating our students while supporting an objective study that will enormously benefit ALL our hardworking Queens families. Restoration of the line would ease commutes, create jobs, spur economic growth and help our environment by taking thousands of cars off our congested roadways.

I have made transportation and the restoration of the Rockaway Beach Rail Line a top priority and will continue to work with my colleagues and the community to provide the public transit we desperately need. The MTA agrees that Restoring the Rail Line is the most efficient and inexpensive way to increase public transit and this study is the perfect next step...
