Last month I toured the Rockaway Wastewater Treatment Plant after receiving countless complaints from residents.
On the tour, I made it absolutely clear that something had to be done to protect our community and local schools from the terrible odor.
I am proud to report that I spoke with DEP this morning and they have intiated a plan to contain and minimize the odor.
After completing a full assessment, it was determined that the primary tank effluent launders and the aerator influent distribution channel were the most odorous locations and DEP has already issued a contract to cover those areas! They are targeting May 30thto have this work complete.
DEP will be using the same company (Hallsten Corp) that supplied covers for the Owls Head plant in Bay Ridge, which have been working well since 2010. They believe that this work will make a significant dent in the odors…In addition, trees and shrubs will be planted to absorb other lingering odors!
Please feel free to call my office with any questions or concerns!
Best,
Phil
