Crowds turned out and prizes were great for the successful Broad Channel Prince-Wynn penny social. Crowds turned out and prizes were great for the successful Broad Channel Prince-Wynn penny social. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary Penny Social brought in a packed crowd and wall to wall prizes in Broad Channel on Saturday, November 16th.
Prizes, which were arranged on tables and through the middle of the BC American Legion Hall where the event was held, ranged from sets of books and elaborate gift baskets to bicycles, barbecues and a big screen TV.
Those attending a penny social, or silent auction, buy raffle tickets which they then deposit on items they would like to win. Tickets for each item are then drawn and a winner is announced.
Tickets, color coded for the different levels of prizes, were selling very well at the door. There were also door prizes and other raffles.
Some who attended the lively evening event noted that it went on till past midnight. All had an enjoyable time.
At one point the caller onstage announced that donated funds had run short for completing the installation of festive holiday lights all across Cross Bay Boulevard in Broad Channel. Almost everyone in the Legion Hall took out and contributed dollars to keep the project going.
Proceeds for the successful VFW Penny Social will go towards funding the full Thanksgiving dinner the group hosts for the disabled veterans of the St. Albans VA Hospital. It will also support future programs and events dedicated to local veterans.
The Broad Cannel Prince-Wynn VFW Post 260, which is still dealing with repairs to their own hurricane ravaged hall, offered their thanks to their American Legion Post 1404 neighbors for opening their doors and offering their building for this event.
