Have you seen the hundreds of geese gathering in the skies above the Channel and landing on the smooth waters of the bay? Coming back over the bridge from Rockaway the other night, I saw them just to my left spread across the dusk sky.
Yes, the Canadian geese are in town. Watch where you step, Broad Channel.
What’s coming up next in BC? The Broad Channel Crafters and the American Legion Auxiliary are presenting the 25th Annual Craft and Christmas Gift Sale within the next few weeks. Make your plans to be there at the Legion Hall on Friday, December 6th from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, December 7th from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
They will have crafts of all kinds, unique handmade items, jewelry, ornaments, baked goods, seasonal decorations, raffles (of course! This is Broad Channel!) and more. The kitchen will also be open with lunch, refreshments and beverages for sale.
It sounds like a fun time. And all proceeds go to benefit the Broad Channel American Legion Rebuilding Fund. If you are coming from ‘out of town’ (and you are more than welcomed), the American Legion is at209 Cross Bay Boulevard.
His Final Touch prayer group meets the first Monday of every month at the St. Virgilius Convent at 210 Noel Road at 7 p.m. Next meeting is Monday, December 2nd. Come down and see what they’re about.

I guess I am now finally, officially ‘home’. My first set of address labels arrived at the new place on Saturday, accompanied by the first request for a charity donation! Yep, they found me!
Father Alhmeyer let me know that the Thanksgiving Day Mass at St. Virgilius will be on Thursday, November 28th, at 9 a.m. Families are invited to bring something that will be used at their family meal to be blessed. (I do not believe the television remote counts.)
About the Christmas Pageant, practice has begun with St. V organist Dianne Spellman- James. The pageant itself will be presented on Christmas Eve at the 4 p.m. Mass.
Practice will be held in St. Virgilius Church on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Students in Grades 1 to 8 are invited to participate.
I have had the pleasure of singing a few impromptu Masses with Dianne. This past Easter I was thrilled to be with the great people at Christ Presbyterian by the Sea as they celebrated their first service since the storm. It was held at the BCAC clubhouse.
Leaving there I then went over to celebrate at St. Virgilius. As luck would have it the church was packed, so I found a place up in the choir loft, next to the organ. Sometime while singing along during the Mass, Dianne and I chatted a bit. Later she invited me to come back to sing with her at the later Mass.
She really knows her stuff and is great at translating musical ideas in a way that is very easy to pick up on.
Starting on December 2nd, from Monday to Thursday, the 8 a.m. Mass will be celebrated in St. Virgilius Convent at 210 Noel Road.
Big things coming to the library? Don’t know, but there was a huge “Somebody or Other Van Lines” truck out front early on Monday morning.
We can say that the BC Library will now be lending out Google Chrome tablets to customers. If you have a library card, you can borrow one for one month, and renew up to three times.
Sandy-struck local Queens libraries have received 5,000 donated units.
Don’t know what a Google Chrome tablet is? Come into the library and learn new things.
Anybody see the crew filming at the Cross Bay Bridge toll plaza the other week? Anybody catch the name of the production they were on?
The VFW threw an awesome Penny Social last Saturday night. The place was packed with people and a ton of very amazing prizes. All proceeds will go to providing a great Thanksgiving dinner for the St. Albans Hospital vets.
I had a great time sharing a table with Carmen and Christine of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. I hear the proceedings went on past midnight.
A shout out to great Legion regular bartenders Pat and Mike. They worked the Halloween party and their costume was so complete it even included the bar!
Finally, Joyce Adamiszyn shares “the long awaited retirement party for Reverend Andrea Zarou, postponed for a year because of Hurricane Sandy was held last Sunday at Roma View (in Howard Beach.) What a WONDERFUL time was had by all. Old friends, new friends and family all gathered for a fun filled walk down memory lane. Many tears, many laughs, as well as good food, filled the afternoon. Christ Presbyterian Church would like to THANK ALL who attended the party and who have supported us. It was GREAT to see everyone. Thanks to all.”
It was indeed a great occasion. Very moving, very heartfelt and a whole lot of fun, too. I think the ‘whole lot of fun’ was actually centered at Table 4 and spread outward. At some point I was accidently slightly ‘baptized’ with a bit of spilled champagne. (Things must be looking up for me!)
It was beautiful occasion. There was so much good feeling in the room, and so many smiles. What people had to say was amazingly sincere. Reverend Zarou was very touched.
I think the beautiful book, filled with memories, which was presented to her said it best. “For Your Grace. For Your Kindness. For Your Dedication. Thank You.
