The 100th Precinct Community Council Meeting was held on Wednesday, November 20th at the Knights of Columbus.
Once again the meeting was well attended. Joining us were representatives from our local elected officials along with Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder who spoke of the importance and need for our community to work together for the benefit of all.
Danny Ruscillo, council president, was pleased to announce the afterschool “Chess Program” at PS/MS 47 and PS/MS 114 and they will be having a Christmas party and all the children will be receiving “Chess Club” t-shirts. Lenny from Rockaway Graphics will be providing shirts at a terrific price for the council, and Condor Pest Control (Alan Camhi, owner) is sponsoring the shirts.
Thanks also went to The American Legion Post 272 for their annual donation to the council.
Also the 100th Precinct has a donation drop box for gently used jackets and sweaters.
As of Sunday, November 24th Chief Ronnie of the Rockaway Volunteer Ambulance Service will now be able to take care of and stabilize patients before EMS arrives, since they are now certified as first responders.
The fourth annual “Chili Cook Off” will be held on January 17th at the Knights of Columbus from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Admission is $12 at the door. The council has 21 entries and is able to accommodate 25.
Three thank you letters were received from various food pantries for the food the council collected and donated. A thanks was given by the council to the Rockaway Free Flea Market, for their help in a food drive.
Danny announced that three arrests were made within the last two months; all were residents of the Park Inn located on Ocean Promenade in Rockaway Park. The arrests were for open alcohol in public, aggressive pan handling and open warrants, all quality of life issues.
John McGoldrick, Assistant District Attorney from the Queens County District Attorney’s Office shared information with the council members, that Samuel Doctor pleaded guilty to first-degree rape of a 62 year old woman. He was sentenced to a determinate term of 20 years.
Marissa Bernowitz spoke about the Free Rockaway Thanksgiving Community Dinner being held on November 26th at PS 183.
Detective Brian McCabe explaind the necessity to inform Community Affairs of any community event well in advance that will take place within the confines of the 100th Precinct, this will enable them to assist. Detective McCabe furnished the phone number for Community Affairs, 718 318-4233.
Cop of the Month awards were given to Officer Helen Olagunju, youth officer for the 100th Precinct for her excellent work with the youth in our community.
Officer Olagunju addressed the problem of bullying and shared tips on how to notice if your child may be a victim of bullying.
Officer Adrian Santi of Transit District 23 was awarded for his arrest of a man for attempted assault on a woman traveling on the subway.
There will be a change in the scheduling for our Community Council meetings.
As of this February and March there will be no meetings.
The council will hold meetings through the summer months, including July and August which use to be the council’s recess time.
A council member suggested Captain Craig Adelman should be given an MVP award for a job well done, since he was appointed the Commander of the 100th Precinct.
