Coastal Hazard Message
National Weather Service New York NY
357 AM EST Sat Mar 3 2018
...COASTAL FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT [for tonight's 9:44 pm high tide]
FROM 7 PM THIS EVENING TO 2 AM EST SUNDAY...
The National Weather Service in New York NY has issued a Coastal
Flood Warning, which is in effect from 7 PM this evening to 2 AM
EST Sunday.
* LOCATIONS...Vulnerable areas along the south shore bays of
Queens, Southern Nassau, and Southwest Suffolk counties
including the ocean beachfront.
* TIDAL DEPARTURE...2 1/2 to 3 1/2 ft above astronomical tides
today and tonights high tides, and 2 to 3 ft above for Sunday
morning high tide.
* TIMING...Widespread moderate coastal flooding is expected with
today and tonight`s high tide. Locally major coastal flooding
possible for tonights high tide along the Great South Bay. Minor
to locally moderate for Sunday morning high tide.
* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Inundation of 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 feet above
ground level tonight, in low lying, vulnerable areas. This will result in
numerous road closures and cause widespread flooding of low
lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes
and businesses with basements near the waterfront. Vehicles
parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will become
flooded. Flooding will also extend inland from the waterfront
along tidally affected waterways.
* SHORELINE IMPACTS...Elevated water levels and breaking waves of
4 to 8 feet will likely result in significant beach erosion
Saturday through Monday along the ocean beachfront. Areas of
dune erosion and localized washovers are possible. In addition 1
to 3 ft waves along the north shore of the barrier islands may
cause splash over sea walls, and minor damage to shoreline
structures.
* UNCERTAINTY...There is medium confidence on the magnitude of
coastal flooding this morning due to a large spread in surge
model guidance. Meanwhile there is medium to high confidence
for tonight with better agreement between models.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
