Ulrich Allocates Funds to Beautify Broad Channel (The FORUM)

By Michael V. Cusenza...The FORUM

City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) recently heralded the results of a beautification initiative that addressed trash-prone parts of Broad Channel.

The clean-up program, which began in September and wrapped up last week, targeted problematic areas between the Joseph P. Addabbo Memorial Bridge and the Broad Channel Athletic Club. Ulrich funded the initiative through Wildcat Service Corporation – a nonprofit organization that provides opportunities and resources for unemployed and underemployed New Yorkers to receive training and guidance, find jobs, and build careers.

“The Addabbo Bridge serves as the gateway to the community and this initiative will go a long way in addressing problematic streets and mediums in the area,” Ulrich said. “Ensuring the quality of life for my constituents is a priority, and I am confident that this partnership with Wildcat will help to achieve this goal.”

This year, Ulrich has made a concerted effort to invest in projects and programs aimed at beautifying District 32—and he noted last week that “we are far from finished.” In August, Ulrich announced that he has secured more than $85,000 for the expansion of sanitation services along Cross Bay Boulevard, including additional trash pick-up locations, as well as mechanical broom sweeping between Liberty Avenue and 165th Avenue.

“Ensuring the cleanliness of the district is a top priority,” Ulrich said in August.

The councilman also funds a no-cost graffiti removal program in collaboration with the Queens Economic Development Corporation.

“I want to thank Councilman Ulrich and Wildcat for helping to beautify this portion of Broad Channel, which seems to fall through the cracks when no City agency is willing to address the need to weed and clean it,” Broad Channel Civic Association President Dan Mundy, Jr. said last week. “It will make the entranceway to Broad Channel and the Rockaways much nicer – and just in time for the annual FDNY Turkey Trot 5K Run.”
