Broad Channel Bits

By Dan Guarino

The recent late evening (really) high tide gave me a chance to try out my (really cheap) rubber boots. Walmart-$22! And yes, there were cheaper ones.
I have to say getting into them was an entertaining 15 minutes all by itself. Once on it was like walking around with two firehoses jammed up over my calves. Since the boots had to be big enough to get my leg into, I had plenty of room for my foot to roam around! There was also the vacuum suction issue when trying to get them off. Still, they did keep me dry and got me out of the house. Next I’ll be in Sears—looking for a kayak.
This Saturday, April 16, is the big day! The Broad Channel Athletic Club will be holding their Opening Day Parade and ceremonies. If you pass along Cross Bay Boulevard, you will see hundreds of kids in their bright, colorful team uniforms, along with parents, families and friends happily marching along towards the BCAC Field. It stretches for blocks, and is guaranteed to get numerous Rockaway bound drivers to slow down and have a look.
If you are in the parade, the assembly point is 17 Road Park at 9:15 a.m. Step off time is officially 9:45 a.m. If you happen to be in the area, there is nothing like the fun and excitement of having all these young players gathered together.
After the whole parade reaches the field at north end of town, the opening day ceremonies will take place. Then the teams will break out into exhibition games all over the field. Everyone gets to play.
Kindergartners through eighth graders will also be raising money and competing for prizes as part of the Jamaica Bay Little League Walk- A-Thon. Go to www.bcacny.com and see how you can still support.
Hop over the bridge for the 7th Annual Chili Cook Off at the Knights of Columbus on Friday night, April 15, starting at 7 p.m. It’s hosted by the 100th Precinct Community Council, and both new Council President Joe Young and Kathy Heavey have put a lot of work into it. So far there are about 25 different entries, covering an intriguing variety of tastes.
There will be prizes for the top chili winners, including a great trophy topped by a chef, and bragging rights for years to come. Come down, enjoy and support.
If you were unable to fill out a survey form from Project Restoration, stop by the Rockaway Wellness Expo this Sunday, April 17. Project Restoration, which is part of Northwell, formerly LIJ, will be handing out surveys about our Sandy experiences and how it has affected us. Each 18+ participant will receive $15 for their completed survey.
The Wellness Expo will be at Temple Beth-El147-02 Newport Ave., from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stop by and say ‘hi’ to my good friend, Dr. Nancy Gahles, who is organizing the event.
Just received this in the old Inbox: “Dear Dan - I am very pleased to inform you that we have scheduled the publication of Broad Channel Through Time, for Monday, Aug. 15, 2016. I wanted to give you this advance notice so that you can ensure you have time to fit in any media interviews, book signings, or other events that will surround the publication of your book…” - Leigh Scott, independent sales manager, Arcadia Publishing and The History Press (and apparently Fonthill Media).
We Care NY and NY Cares Volunteer Day are hosting a cleanup at Broad Channel American Park down by the Cross Bay Bridge at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday, April 16. It’ll be fun!
Let’s Try That Again: This story was published in The Brooklyn Eagle on Tuesday, July 27, 1909: “Firemen Will Dance: The Broad Channel Fire Department is making preparations for a barn dance to be given in the fire house next Saturday night and the affair promises to be very largely attended. The firemen will hold their annual inspection and parade and Mardi Gras on Labor Day, and it is expected that this season’s event will surpass anything ever given at the Channel.” Thanks to Janet O’Hare, again, for sharing this.
Next weekend the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department is having their annual Open House and demonstration and recruitment event. This year they will be at VFW Post 260 at 705 Shad Creek Road on Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be plenty of kids’ activities and safety and lifesaving demonstrations for all ages. Thinking of volunteering? Come and see what it takes to be a Vollie.
Just saw this message posted by Dennis O’Connor on Friends of Rockaway Beach Facebook page. “FYI,Rockawayites!!! The PB (Participatory Budget) voting is in! Out of 50,000 families in Rockaway a whopping 900 voted! And half of those 900 were from Broad Channel!! Good job, Broad Channel!!! Rockaway?? This is how we got stuck with de Blasio!!! ... U need to vote!!”
Write this down for May. There will be a Country Music Night for a Friend In Need at Grassy’s on Saturday, May 14, from 7 p.m.
Also the BCAC’s Annual Jim and Claire Hanning Memorial Golf Outing is on for Friday, May 20. More details to come on both these items and more.
Josette Correa over at the VFW forwarded this item from Santa RitaGuam. “Master at Arms 3rd Class Teresa E. Correa was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal in a ceremony at the base chapel on April 5.” Congrat-ulations, sailor!
Finally, clocking in at 8 seconds, “To Broad Channel!” by John Cori is probably the shortest film ever made about our island home. But it is a delightful ride! Check it out via John’s Facebook page.
