Broad Channel Bits

By Dan Guarino

Sometime last year I saw a young woman at an event in the Channel. She had on a green and white Broad Channel Athletic Club T-shirt. It read “Wherever I go, whatever I do, I will always be a Shamrock.”
That simple message spoke volumes about the values and pride instilled by the BCAC, and echoed throughout our town. When I try to describe to people what Broad Channel is like as a community, I often point to the memory of that T-shirt and slogan to sum it all up.
Polish off your favorite knife and fork and get ready for the first brunch of the season. On Sunday, March 13, from 10 to 1, the American Legion Auxiliary is hosting the 13th Annual Jane Fuller Memorial Cancer Care Brunch. Jane was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and is still deeply missed. Proceeds from the brunch go to Cancer Care.
Come and enjoy pancakes, eggs, bacon, ham, sausage all cooked to order, and coffee, tea, cake and more. Bring the neighbors. Have relatives or friends who’ve been to a Legion brunch? Invite them along and show them the Channel.
Coming from ‘out of town’? You are always welcome at a Broad Channel event! The American Legion Hall is at 209 Cross Bay Blvd.
Wear your best BCAC green and come out for Radio Bingo on Saturday, March 12. Doors open at the American Legion at 7 p.m. Games start at 8 p.m. All proceeds go to the support the BCAC.
Bring snacks. No coolers please. Twisted Tea, beer and a cash bar will be available for purchase. Line up a babysitter, as this event is adults only. And line up your tickets by contacting Erin atEPOS868@gmail.com or Jerilyn at jam10500@gmail.com.
No, Zumba is not one of the characters from The Lion King. Find out what it’s about and enjoy yourself with sessions on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 12:30 p.m. Contact instructor Cat McCarthy atcatnrich12@gmail.com for more info. Ladies and gentlemen, all you need to be 16 or over, wear suitable exercise clothes and be at the Christ Presbyterian Church by the Sea Hall. It’s right here in town!
Get in better shape. Feel good. Lose weight. Drop the workout and join the party! Proceeds go to Christ Presbyterian Church.
Hit the brakes and sign up now for the 6 Hour Defensive Driving Class. Get 10 percent off your car insurance for the next three years and take four points off your license when you complete the class, which is given over Wednesday, April 6 and 13, from 7 to 10 p.m.
Yes, you do need attend both nights. But there’s is no test and refreshments will be served. Call Helen now at 917-553-2409 or 718-945-4648 to reserve your seat. Proceeds benefit St. Camillus Catholic Academy.
Not too long ago I got caught out. My defensive driving discount expired and there were no sessions I could readily get to. I signed up for the online course. It was grueling. No interaction, no questions or information from other drivers and also constant numbers to call in or questions to answer to verify it was actually me taking the course. On top of that, imagine being glued to your chair in front of your computer for the marathon 2 plus hour modules. Oh, and then there are the tests.
Do yourself a favor. Sign up for this class and go!
Tickets are already selling for the American Legion’s big Doo-Wop Show on Saturday, April 2. Your admission includes a great pasta buffet dinner, The Devotions and The Tribunes doing all your 50’s and 60’s oldies but goodies, there will be a dance contest, cash bar and more. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 and the show at 8.
Reserve your table now. Call Carol at 917-930-0546, Janet at 718-483- 3811 or Margaret at 917-751-3698. All proceeds help to support our Legion veterans programs.
Many thanks to all the friends and neighbors who came out for the Rockaway Artists Alliance Afternoon of Irish Stories, Humor and Song I organized and hosted last Sunday!
On Sunday, March 20, at 3 p.m. RAA will be hosting a very unique and moving version of The Passion story according to Matthew.
The very talented Dzcieci Theatre troupe will perform A Passion at the RAA’s T-7 Gallery at Fort Tilden, appropriately enough on Palm Sunday. As always it is free and all are welcome.
Well, the big news in the Channel this week is that Blue Bloods, the popular police/family drama came for a day and evening of on location shooting on Tuesday, March 8.
Starting before 7 a.m. they came in with several large trucks, many prop police vehicles, lots of equipment, more than 100 crew and extras and three of the show’s stars.
Actors Donnie Wahlberg, Sami Gayle and Bridget Moynahan worked all day filming scenes near the American Park ballfields, parking lot and the reedy shoreline at the southern end of the island near the Cross Bay Bridge.
Wahlberg and Moynahan also gave BC fans a thrill by graciously snapping photos with them up near theRuffle Bar and All-American Market. There was a lot buzz about how nice they were and how they had fun with it, too.
The finished scenes should turn up in the season finale. It was not known whether Broad Channel would be appearing as itself or be standing in for someplace else.
Finally, this week Broad Channel says goodbye to Margaret Ferchland of East 8th Road. She passed away on March 7. Our thoughts are with her son, Jim Ferchland, of the BCAC, and family, and all the friends and neighbors that will miss her dearly. There is an empty place in our Broad Channel community, the community where Margaret made her home.
Thanks for reading
