The snow’s pretty much all gone now. But two weeks ago we were all digging our way out of a blizzard.
For me it brought back a memory. I was displaced for almost a year after Hurricane Sandy. After a heavy snow in South Ozone Park, where I was living in a room in my daughter’s apartment, I went out with my trusty Lowe’s shovel.
When I was done clearing the sidewalk and front steps, I turned and started to help shovel the driveway and sidewalk next door.
The nice Indian couple who were digging out their walk and driveway, trying to get their car out, looked at me strangely. “Why would you do that?” they asked as we shoveled together. When I was done clearing the sidewalk and front steps, I turned and started to help shovel the driveway and sidewalk next door.
“Because that’s what neighbors do,” I said, “where I’m from.”
When I moved away one sunny summer day, back to the Channel, I think they were still looking puzzled.

Finally, it might just be a few people doing it, but vandalism in BC makes all of us look bad. The broken tree posts at 17 Road Park and the busted letters over the library are not coming back soon.
So let me ask those few people, how would you feel if somebody else came in and trashed the Channel? It might have seemed like fun at the time, but going forward, please, don’t.
