Sometimes something as simple as a phone call or knocking on the door of an elderly relative or neighbor in the bitter cold weather we are experiencing can literally save a life.  It only takes a moment to check in and make sure they are doing alright.....

Are they staying warm?

Is their heating system fueled and working properly and set at a reasonable temperature?

Are they dripping domestic water lines to obviate freeze-up or worse, bursting?

Are they using portable heaters safely?

Do they need medical attention?

Do they have adequate required medications and medical supplies?

Do they have an adequate food supply and a safe way to prepare meals.

Do they have symptoms of cold related illness (i.e. shivering, exhaustion, confusion, memory loss, slurred speech or white/grayish skin color? If you feel that an elderly neighbor is ill call 9-1-1.

If you feel they may be in danger if they remain alone, ask them to come home with you until the temperature rises to a safe level and the dangerous condition in their home.
