Weekend Nor'Easter Update

While the snow is certainly the most notable and visual phenomenon of a winter storm, nor'easter or even a blizzard, all of us here in the Rockaway/Broad Channel area should be more concerned with the fact that this will be a slow moving storm with strong onshore winds during the highest tidal period (full moon) of the month.  As such, we must also take into consideration the possibility of a significant storm surge.

Saturday morning's 6' high tide will occur at 7:30 a,m,

Early indications are that the more severe coastal flooding will occur to the south of our area along the New Jersey coast, Saturday morning's high tide here in Broad Channel may be accompanied by a 2.5 foot to 3 foot storm surge tidal departure meaning a total 8.5 to 9 foot storm tide Saturday morning.

[NOTE: Storm Tide = Tide Height + Storm Surge Height]

If it's a slow-moving storm the storm tide could remain high through multiple tidal cycles as the persistent onshore winds will impede the runoff/drainage of tidal waters

All cars on West 12th Road should be removed and parked safely off street to avoid damage by coastal flooding by Friday evening when northwest winds are forecast to shift to northeast. This will also allow for unimpeded access by DSNY plows for snow/ice/slush removal .

The contractors working at the end of West 12th Road have indicated that they will contact the Department of Sanitation to ensure that any street plowing does not result in the bulk of snow being deposited at the bay end of the clock which would impede tidal runoff.

The contractors have also stated that they will do all they can to configure the bay end construction area of West 12th Road to allow for maximum runoff of tidal street flooding prior to the storm's arrival.
