Weekend of Fundraisers
"Minnie"
On Saturday, January 9, all are welcome to attend a fundraiser for Minerva Horan in Broad Channel. Thirty-year-old Minerva, or Minnie, was diagnosed with a rare form of fibromatosis. This leaves her highly likely to develop tumors throughout her body. On top of this she has recently been diagnosed with Stage III sarcoma of the peripheral nerve. She has undergone at least two surgeries to remove tumors, one of which required a double blood transfusion during recovery to save her life. Following a second surgery, she developed two blood clots and is on blood thinners. Her friends and family are hoping to provide her services at a good hospital that will increase her chances of a long, happy life, but her insurance doesn’t cover all of the expenses.
On Saturday, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the VFW Post 260 (713 Shad Creek Road, Broad Channel), there will be a fundraiser for Minnie featuring some great bands. The Solshyne Trio will perform at 8 p.m., followed by Indaculture at 9 p.m., Walker and the Brotherhood of the Grape at 10 p.m. and The Poor House at 11 p.m. For fun, guests are encouraged to dress in their favorite hippie gear, but it is optional. The event is $10 at the door. You can bring your own food or snacks and there is a cash bar at the VFW. There will also be raffles. If you can’t attend the event, but want to help Minnie, donations can be made at www.gofundme.com/minnieweloveyou.
