Dear Neighbor,

While hurricane forecasts are often uncertain and storm paths can be unpredictable, those of us who have been through Sandy know that we must always hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

The purpose of this email is not to alarm anyone, but to simply provide information that could help ensure our community is prepared in the event that Hurricane Joaquin makes landfall in our neighborhoods.

With that in mind, I've put together valuable hurricane preparedness information and useful links that will help ensure the well-being of our families as we all watch Joaquin take its course in the coming days.

Stay Strong,
Hurricane Preparedness
In order to prepare yourself and your family for hurricanes and other emergencies, please consider taking the following precautions:
  • Understand your hurricane risks and community evacuation plans. To determine your evacuation route and community shelter location, consult the city'sEmergency Evacuation Zones.
  • Pay attention to the news. Local television and radio stations will broadcast Emergency Alert System updates. Listen to NOAA Weather Radio
  • Pick meeting places for your family - one place near your home in the event of fires, and another outside your neighborhood in case you can't immediately return home.
  • Make plans for pets in case of evacuation.
  • Determine where to move cars and boats in the event of major flooding.
  • For more tips, please consult your city and stateemergency services.
Emergency Supplies
One of the best ways that you and your family can prepare for Hurricanes and other major emergencies is to prepare a family disaster supply kit. Here are a few of the items you should consider including:

Food and Water
  • 3-day supply of food for each member of your family. Include canned and dehydrated food, powdered milk and canned juices. Be sure to stock special foods and supplements for infants and elderly members of your family.
  • 3-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day). Use disinfectants, such as iodine tablets or drops of chlorine bleach to purify water, if necessary.
  • Cooking utensils, plates, alternate cooking sources (charcoal, camper stoves), manual can opener.
First Aid and Hygiene
  • One week supply of medications and dietary needs.
  • Up-to-date first aid kit, fully stocked and placed in a central location.
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and ties for personal sanitation.
Shelter and Rescue
  • Dust mask to filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting & duct tape to shelter in place.
  • Flashlights with extra batteries
  • whistle to signal for help.
  • Battery-powered or hand-cranked radio to listen for weather and other updates.
  • Pliers, wrenches and other tools to turn appliances and utilities on or off.
Communication and Documentation
  • Cell phone and charger.
  • Local maps.
  • Important documents stored in waterproof container: insurance policies, bank account numbers, medical records, Social Security card, IDs, AM cards, check books.
