Celebrate "Flag Day" this Sunday, June 14th

Although all one has to do is stroll any of the streets in our small community to realize that Broad Channel celebrates "Flag Day" 365 days a year, I still thought it appropriate to post the above video by Drexel University and the Philadelphia Flag Day Association which explores the history of our nation's flag.

The video provides a history of our flag that most people are totally unaware of.

Take some time and share this video with your children.

Heck, share it with your entire family and all your friends.

The original inspiration for this 1906 George M. Cohan favorite came from a chance encounter Cohan had with a Civil War veteran who fought at Gettysburg.

The two men found themselves next to each other and Cohan noticed the veteran held a carefully folded but ragged old flag.

The man reportedly turned to Cohan and remarked, "She's a grand old rag."

Cohan thought it was a great line and originally named his tune "You're a grand old rag."

Many groups and individuals objected so strenuously to calling the flag a "rag" that Cohan ultimately renamed the song "You're a grand old flag."
