Broad Channel Volunteers Hold Open House

Broad Channel Volies Hold Open House

By Dan Guarino
The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department brought a half dozen of their trucks, inflated bouncy houses, put on the hot dogs and staged demonstrations as they invited the public to an open house on Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26.
The event was part of a drive to educate residents about what they do and to recruit new volunteers.
Children enjoyed getting to use a real fire hose and handle full size firefighter’s tools. The crowd also watched suited-up rescuers dismantle a wrecked car to demonstrate an auto accident rescue. The Volies, as they are known in Broad Channel, also demonstrated the tools and equipment that allow them to bend open doors, slice out windshield glass and cut through tube steel.
After the event, BCVFD organizers noted they had 10 applicants so far.The BCVFD offers training opportunities in dispatching, firefighting and emergency medical service, as well as programs for young people.
