Between the Bridges in Broad Channe;l

Between The Bridges

Adam Swift, a professor of Politics and International studies at the University of Warwick in England, believes that if you are a parent who reads to your child at bedtime you are raising a “bedtime-story privileged” child, causing great harm to society and should be ashamed of yourself!
Along with other traditional societal institutions he deems worthless and possibly damaging, Professor Swift believes that parents who read bedtime stories to their children and perhaps even form strong family bonds with them in general — are putting other children, who do not receive the same parental attention, at an unfair disadvantage.
Would you like to stick it right back to Professor “Not So” Swift?  Want some suggestions as to what to read?  Well Katie McFadden, intrepid reporter for the Rockaway Times, is well ahead of the curve on this pressing social issue.
Katie had a nice article in last week’s RT about Rockaway Lifeguard Brian Gillen’s newly published book, entitled A Theology of Wonder: G.K. Chesterton’s Response to Nihilism.  For those of you with children who may not be up to engaging in the good fight against moral relativism I suggest you go with Katie’s second choice, a book by Chris Gorman entitled Indi Surfs, a surf story for children which was also featured in last week’s RT.
C’mon…did you think I would recommend some horror story about a little girl walking alone in the woods being chased by a hungry wolf who just ate a member of her family?
Don’t forget this Sunday’s brunch at the Broad Channel VFW on Shad Creek Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stop by for the garbage omelet which is simply to die for. I know it’s Sunday morning and the room may be spinning, your head may be pounding, and your stomach may be reminding you of last night’s bad decisions, but don’t fret – it’s nothing a good old fashioned Bloody Mary can’t fix as long as it is imbibed prior to noon!  As a wise editor once opined, “mid-day dining with a side of drinking can give you the wild and crazy reputation you want. You can look really decadent and devil-may-care and no one has to know you’re planning to be in bed before sunset…bottoms up…seize the day you early birds!”
The Broad Channel Memorial Day Parade will take place on Sunday, May 24. The parade will start at 1:00 p.m. with a wreath laying ceremony at the 17th Road Park Flag Pole and then travel along Cross Bay Boulevard to the George Riekers Veterans Memorial Park for another wreath laying and closing ceremonies. As always, our honored guests will be those veterans from St. Albans Hospital who will be joined by our own local veteran members of the Broad Channel VFW and American Legion as well as our elected officials and other community organizations.
Please make it a point to spend a few moments of your time to walk up to Cross Bay Boulevard to view the parade to show your support for our veterans and to express your appreciation for those veterans who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
After the parade, all of you are invited to the VFW Post on Shad Creek Road for a BBQ and a chance to greet and thank our men and women who have served us so well and to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that they may not be forgotten.
Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?
