Between the Bridges (Rockaway Times)

Between The Bridges — A Tough 590 Days Ahead

As Sherlock Holmes would say, “The game is afoot!”  At 12:09 am last Monday morning, United States Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) announced his entry into the 2016 Presidential race with the following Tweet:  “I’m running for President and I hope to earn your support!”
The literal translation of Senator Cruz’s tweet can be summed up as follows:  now we all can expect the next 590 or so days to bring us a seemingly never-ending stream of televised political ads, YouTube videos, Tweets, unsolicited emails, stacks of campaign related snail mail, annoyingly tacky bill boards and similarly tacky lawn signs.  On the bright side there will also be no shortage of political jokes.  Then again, the problem with political jokes is that they sometimes get elected. Our present Commander in Chief is even floating the idea of making voting mandatory but more on that next week.
My only advice to you as we enter this Twilight Zone of political theater is to try and distinguish the politicians from the Statesmen.  The politician is only looking towards the next election while a true Statesmen or woman is looking to the next generation. If that fails, vote for the guy or gal who promises the least.  He or she will be the least disappointing.
Who knows, maybe Kevin Boyle will decide to throw his hat in the ring for 2016 as a third party candidate?  “If politics makes you recoil in disgust- Boyleing Points will restore your long lost trust!”
Finally, keep in mind that in Mexico, the people call an air conditioner a “politician” because it makes a lot of noise and doesn’t work very well.
The Broad Channel VFW Post #260 on Shad Creek Road was rocking Saturday evening into the wee hours of Sunday morning with the great sounds of Walker and the Brotherhood of the Grape.  The event was a great success and the guys and gals from the VFW extend their sincere appreciation to Walker, all the other bands and everyone who attended.
Keep in mind that the Christ Presbyterian By The Sea Church will be hosting a Penn Social fundraiser on Saturday, March 28th starting at 6:30 pm with a $10 entry fee.  All proceeds benefit Relay for Life sponsored by Brian’s Buddies.  To reserve a table contact Nicole Keller at347-967-9162.  There will be a DJ, raffles and 50/50’s.
The Broad Channel American Legion will be holding a Palm Sunday Brunch on March 29th from 10 am to 1 pm with breakfast “cooked to order.”  All proceeds from the brunch will go benefit the Legion’s many programs.
Everyone is invited to enjoy breakfast with the Easter Bunny on Sunday, April 5th from 10 am to 2 pm.  There’ll be eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon, coffee, tea and juice with some 50/50 and raffles just to keep things interesting!
As always, the St. Virgilius Golden Age Club meets every Thursday at the American Legion Hall in Broad Channel. At 12:30 pm.
Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?
